Description

This is a rare and amazing opportunity, to purchase a certified organic farm, currently growing coffee, banana, platano, mandarina, apples, avocado, guayaba, limes, lemons, orange and a wide variety of other plants and trees.

The location is in a traditional coffee growing area. It is at an altitude of 1250 meters (4,101 feet), perfect for coffee and various other plants and trees that struggle at hotter temperatures. There is nearly always a nice cooling breeze. It is in a quiet location with distant neighbours. The whole farm benefits from amazing, spectacular views, especially sunsets and even moonsets!

It is in the foothills of the Chirripo Mountain and the area is experiencing growth related to this. To cope with the demand for access to the highest mountain in Costa Rica, a second access point for trekkers has recently been opened just a couple of miles from the farm. This will mean a growth in accommodation and tourist facilities, further up the valley, and demand for local organic produce is sure to increase.

The main house is beautifully crafted, nearly entirely, from locally sourced wood, and all the services are installed to a high standard, including a biodigester which allows flushing of toilet paper from the four connected toilets. The water is sourced from a spring, of which there are at least four on the farm. The rest of the sinks, showers and the bath (yep a bath!) are connected to a separate septic tank.

The house was originally designed as 2 apartments for renting and has a connecting door which enables it to be used as a normal house. A 200 liter solar hot water system, provides ample hot water to all bathrooms and kitchens. A paved road with a good bus service to San Isidro, is at the bottom of the road that leads to the farm, which is a very quiet, dead end road.

There are various outbuildings including a large barn, a purpose built compost facility of 24 m2, a 60 m2 covered greenhouse, an undercover netted area of 80 m2, perfect for growing crops that need a little protection from pests and or, direct rainfall, plus a small greenhouse for the house. There are visitor facilities, including a toilet, shower, and a kitchen. There is also a goat house, which is designed to be easily converted into a house.

The goats are free range and are currently producing excellent organic milk and cheese. The goats are perfect recycling machines for anything that is not edible or saleable, as well as clearing land for future crops. Their diet is sourced from the farm and the manure is excellent addition to the compost system.

A river cuts through the middle of the farm and provides calming white noise, as well as various swimming holes and endless places to explore. The river is full of a fantastically varied selection of small and large rocks, there are various minerals and metals in-bedded in them and provide fascinating colors and images. I have even found some containing a small amount of gold! I have also had some of the granite type rocks cut into tiles and tiled the bathrooms to spectacular effect. A smaller stream provides the border of the northern part of the farm, this provides water to a tank which is connected to an irrigation system for the whole farm. There is ample drop in the land to provide a hydro power system to take the farm completely off-grid. The professional surveyor estimated that there is enough flow to provide power for 7 houses.

The gentle slopes of the farm are planted with vetiver to great effect and over a thousand trees have planted to provide shade, compost, food, and to attract wildlife. The border fencing is bamboo.

There is a large lake which also attracts wildlife including frogs which provide a beautiful symphony to end the day. The lake will be perfect for tilapia and or trout. The water is cold enough to grow good sized trout. The original goat house is destined to be converted to a chicken house, as the plan to produce all our needs on the farm progresses.

The original idea of the farm was to be an organic, volunteer farm, which is a very popular thing for visitors from Europe as well as the US. Coffee tours, B&B accommodation, a restaurant or a farm shop are also perfectly viable options. The farm has now been farmed organically for 5 years, and the soil is of a very good quality. The steepest contours were planted with vetiver, to stop soil erosion and are now ready to be terraced, making it easier to plant and maintain

This could easily be a turnkey operation to include a Kia truck, a quad bike and a huge variety of tools at a negotiated additional price. We produce all our own compost, organic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers, and all this equipment and knowledge can also be part of the sale.
