The Costa Rica Expat Living Framework

How to Explore Costa Rica the Right Way Before You Make a Big Decision

Most people come to Costa Rica the same way.

They take a vacation.

They fall in love.

And then they start thinking…

“Could I actually live here?”

That’s where things start to go sideways.

The Biggest Mistake People Make

They treat a vacation like research.

They stay in one area. Maybe two.

They get a feel for the place… and assume that’s what Costa Rica is.

It’s not.

Costa Rica is a country of microclimates, wildly different regions, and very different lifestyles — sometimes just an hour apart.

What works for you in one area may not work at all somewhere else.

Why “Exploration Trips” Often Fail

A lot of people come down with the idea of doing an “exploration trip.”

Sounds good in theory.

In practice?

  • They don’t know where to go
  • They spend too much time in the wrong places
  • They don’t understand what they’re actually seeing
  • They leave more confused than when they arrived

And sometimes they make a decision based on incomplete information.

That’s where mistakes happen.

The Framework (What Actually Works)

After years of working with expats — and doing this myself — I’ve found there’s a much better way to approach it.

You need a framework.

Something that helps you:

  • Identify what actually matters to you
  • Narrow down the right regions
  • Understand tradeoffs, because there are always tradeoffs
  • Use your time efficiently when you’re here

This isn’t about seeing more.

It’s about seeing the right things.

A Simple Way to Think About It

If you like having a bit of structure, I tend to break it down into four key factors — the 4 C’s:

  • Climate — Not just temperature, but humidity, elevation, and overall feel
  • Community — The people, the vibe, and how expats and locals interact
  • Convenience — Access to services, healthcare, shopping, and infrastructure
  • Cost — Not just purchase price, but ongoing cost of living

Every area in Costa Rica is going to be a different mix of these four.

And here’s the important part — you’re not going to maximize all of them at the same time.

That’s where most people get stuck.

Step 1: Get Clear on What You Actually Want

Before you even get on a plane, you need clarity.

Not “Costa Rica sounds nice.”

But:

  • Mountain vs beach
  • Cooler climate vs tropical heat
  • Privacy vs walkability
  • Community vs isolation

Most people skip this step — and it costs them time, money, and peace of mind.

Step 2: Narrow Down the Regions

Costa Rica is not one market.

It’s multiple distinct regions:

  • Central Valley
  • Pacific Coast
  • Southern Zone
  • Caribbean
  • Arenal / Lake regions

Each one has a completely different feel, climate, and lifestyle.

Trying to “see it all” in one trip is a mistake.

Step 3: Understand the Tradeoffs

There is no perfect location.

Only tradeoffs.

  • Ocean view → higher price
  • Cooler climate → further from the beach
  • Walkability → less privacy
  • Privacy → more driving

Once you understand that, your decisions get a lot easier.

Step 4: Use Your Time Strategically

When you’re here, every day matters.

You don’t want to:

  • Waste time driving aimlessly
  • Look at the wrong types of properties
  • Focus on areas that don’t fit your goals

A well-structured trip can save you months of second-guessing later.

Step 5: Make Decisions from Clarity, Not Emotion

Costa Rica has a way of pulling you in emotionally.

That’s part of the appeal.

But decisions made purely on emotion often lead to:

  • Buying in the wrong area
  • Overpaying
  • Needing to “undo” a decision later

The goal isn’t to remove emotion.

It’s to balance it with clarity.

Where I Come In

This is exactly what I help people with.

Not just finding properties — but helping you:

  • Figure out where you should be looking in the first place
  • Avoid wasting time on the wrong areas
  • Structure your trip so it actually produces answers

Some people are ready to buy.

Others are just trying to figure out if Costa Rica even makes sense for them.

Both are completely fine.

The Bottom Line

Costa Rica can absolutely be an incredible place to live.

But it’s not one-size-fits-all.

The difference between a great decision and a frustrating one usually comes down to how you approach the exploration phase.

Do it right — and everything that comes after gets easier.
